PRACTICAL 10

Describe in a paragraph, the most important lesson that you had learnt in your EIR journey.

EIR has taught me many different lessons with regards to researching for information on the internet. I learnt how to fully utilize Google, a search engine that I have been using for a very long time. It also gave me a wider variety of search facilities to enlarge the scope of my research. It taught me how different search facilities provide different kind of results, allowing me to make better choices in the future.

TUTORIAL 3 & 4

What role does YouTube play in your life? Can you live without YouTube.

I cannot live without YouTube. Every free time I have on the Internet, I'd be found surfing through random YouTube videos, be it of my favourite songs or funny videos on the net. Although there are other video sharing websites, YouTube, by far is my favourite and easiest to use.

How can you use YouTube for research purposes?

As multimediality is now integrated in new media, videos are also considered highly informative when it comes to research. There are videos that provide step by step visual instructions of how-to topics as well.

PRACTICAL 7

Which criteria did you use to evaluate talkingcock.com? Why did you choose this criteria?

I will be using the criteria 'Purpose'. The 'About Us' link was easily found at the top right corner of the website. It introduced users about the website's objectives and aims. Talkingcock.com is a website where people can discuss on any local current issues. It is a satire site and hence, practices a freedom of speech. It is a community where Singaporeans can read, unwind and get a few laughs out of the local happenings.

PRACTICAL 6

Do you think it is more effective to search the invisible web (databases) than using search engines, meta-search or subject directories? Why?

Personally, I prefer using search engines such as Google as compared to invisible web (databases). Performing a search on my research topic through invisible web also produces lesser and irrelevant results as compared to search engines such as Google.

Will you use the invisible web (databases) for research in your own respective Diplomas? Why?

I will use the invisible web (databases) for my own research. Furthermore, I think I will exhaust all the search facilities taught in EIR as I want to maximize the results of my search efforts in order to gather more information.

PRACTICAL 4 & 5

What benefits do you get when using different search facilities to search for resources related to your topic?

Using different search facilities allows me to gather a more wide coverage of the relation between teens and drug abuse. Different search facilities provide different links to different sources, some based on hits, some based on credibility. With many different sources, I am able to cross check my information between different sources to ensure credibility.

How do you feel about using site feeds in your blog? Would you use this in future?

Using site feeds in my blog is extremely convenient as in a matter of a click, I am able to access all my favourite websites with a condensed version of their updates, keeping me updated quick and easy.

PRACTICAL 3

Were you impressed by google’s search functions/features? Why?

Yes, I was impressed by google's search functions/features. It is impressive how a few search keywords can generate tens and thousands of search results. To aid our search further, Google provides features such as limited the searches within locally based websites and the ability to recognize boolean operators to allow our search result to be more niche. Advanced search also comes with many functions that allows us to narrow down our search results.

How do you feel about participation in discussion forum? Is it helpful for your research? Do you feel anxious about talking to others you do not know?

I have been socially engaged in discussion forums for leisure purposes. Hence, having to perform it for academic purpose may be different but it should not be too difficult.

Why must you do citation and bibliography?

Citations and bibliography are required so that we do not risk plagiarizing other people's work. It allows the readers to refer to the original source of my information for a more in depth coverage.
